Derived from the city database rent and cost ranges; rent shifts with household type, other lines scale with spending style. Personal variation is large — treat this as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

Typical monthly living cost by city

For a single person on a standard budget, the total runs from about ¥110,000 in Gifu to ¥280,000 in Tokyo a month. Rent is the single biggest difference between cities; the rest moves far less.

Living cost in Japan — common questions

How much does it cost to live in Japan per month?

For one person on a standard budget, a typical month runs the range shown in the table above — rent is the biggest variable, so the city you pick matters more than any other choice. The calculator adjusts the figure for household size and spending style.

What does the estimate include, and what does it leave out?

It includes rent, food, utilities, phone, local transport and miscellaneous everyday spending. It excludes one-time move-in costs such as key money and deposit (use the move-in cash tool for those) and it is a living-cost figure, not take-home pay.

Is Tokyo the most expensive city in Japan?

For rent, usually yes, and rent drives the total. But the gap to cities like Osaka, Nagoya or Fukuoka is smaller once food and everyday costs — which barely change between cities — are added in. Compare the totals in the table rather than assuming.

How much rent should I budget for a single room?

The “of which rent” column shows the typical one-room (1R/1K) range for each city. Rent is quoted monthly; expect to pay several months up front at move-in on top of the monthly figure.
