Bonus points that apply to you

Income points by age (official table)

Annual pay (万円, bonuses included)≤29≤34≤3940+

¥9,000,000+35353535
¥8,000,000+30303030

¥6,000,000+202020—
¥5,000,000+1515——
¥4,000,000+10———

Academic and technical fields use the table; below ¥3,000,000 the technical and management fields cannot score at all. Management field pay scale: ¥30,000,000+ → 50 · ¥25,000,000+ → 40 · ¥20,000,000+ → 30 · ¥15,000,000+ → 20 · ¥10,000,000+ → 10.

The score must hold both when you apply and for the whole one- or three-year period before a permanent-residency application. Bonus items marked "designated" depend on lists the Minister of Justice publishes; check your employer or university is on them before counting the points.

How it works: every threshold is taken from the Immigration Services Agency ポイント計算表 (education, experience, income by age band, age, and the fifteen bonus items). The tool applies the same exclusions the table does — N2 does not stack with N1 or a Japanese degree; below ¥3 million a technical or management score is void.

Highly Skilled Professional points — common questions

How many points do I need for the Highly Skilled Professional visa?

70 points on the official table. The most common way to get there in the technical field is a master's degree (20), five years of experience (10), an annual salary of ¥6 million under age 40 (20), being under 35 (10) and JLPT N2 (10) — exactly 70.

Can 80 points really get permanent residency in one year?

Yes. Under the Ministry of Justice permanent-residency guideline, a person who has held 80 or more points for one year can apply after one year of residence; 70–79 points held for three years allows an application after three years. The score must have been met throughout that period, not only on the day you apply.

Which points are the easiest to add?

Language: N1 is worth 15 and N2 is worth 10 (they do not stack). A degree from a Japanese university is 10, and a graduate of a university on the Minister's list gets another 10. For anyone under 30, age alone is 15 points — the table rewards applying early.
